Following the update from Karmic to Lucid I've noticed the error message
nForce2_smbus :00:03.2: Error probing SMB2 on the splash screen
during boot too. The boot up process seems to hold for a few seconds up
until this point. From my kern.log,

Same problem for me - no Window Manager when my session logs in. I can
start compiz manually from System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual
Effects. Other user's don't seem to be affected, although possibly they
aren't using desktop effects.
I tried removing .gconf* .gnome* and .config* after

making superficial changes to the VPN properties and saving them). I
didn't have to restart the system - just log out the other user that was
logged in.
