Hi Daniel - unplugging the phone has proven to resolve the problem. I have had to use the laptop to charge the phone on my trip hence this never showing up as an issue before - I have set show-mounts to false also and will see if this fixes it with the phone connected... or are the two situations

Thanks for looking in to this - please note however that about 3 weeks ago I noticed that the touchpad had got a lot better (I'd been using a mouse since the issue). checking again today - it seems to be fine, so not sure if a kernel update or other has fixed the issue. Have a great Christmas!
