Can confirm this issue on Ubuntu 11.10, using Unity session. This affects both my USB keyboard (Dell OEM), and my media keys on the ThinkPad T410s.
Using "sudo showkey", I can see that the OS detects keycode 165,164,163 and 166 (rewind, play/pause, forward, stop) on both the keyboards, but a big "Ø" shows up on the screen when pressed. Mute and volume buttons work as expected.
