Reinstalling gtklib2.0 seems to have resolved this issue.

I was editing a MS Word document using OpenOffice Writer when my system
restarted as I mistakenly hit the power reset button on the cabinet.
Upon restarting, when I opened the document, OpenOffice Writer prompted
me for document recovery

I have Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit Desktop Edition dual-booted with Windows on a
64-bit AMD Athlon64 4800+ and Gigabyte S-Series 780G motherboard. While
the startup and shutdown work normally the restart takes too long.
Please suggest.
