Your AccountsService comment led me in the right direction. After a lot
of digging, I learned that my /var/lib/AccountsService/users/mendhak
file did not have a Background value.
I then learned that my org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.background
was unchecked in dconf-editor. I checked
Not a bug, set status to invalid.

I have attached my lightdm log file. Anything after the 8second mark is
when I rebooted the machine.
I also tried reinstalling the greeter and rebooting.
sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity-greeter
sudo dpkg
I did a bit more digging around. I had a look at the greeter log file.
I have attached the greeter log file with this comment.
sudo less /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log
I noticed these lines:
