Hi there,
The filesystem was FAT32. Unfortunately I cannot provide anymore
information as the HD was reformatted and Ubuntu 8.0.4 which
reinstalled fine.

No it was a clean 8.04 install then an upgrade. It has incorrectly
reported the architecture, I was trying to install it onto a up
pavillion dv6780ea an Intel core 2 duo laptop
