I did some testing because I seemed to be affected by this issue on
Ubuntu 20.04. In fact I first used the script from bernaerts mentioned
above (#4 for instance). Anyway I disabled its startup before these
tests, I mentioned it to clear the ground.

the problem is the icons in the Humanity theme, namely the files
"audio-volume-.svg" and corresponding .png (where is either
high,low,medium or mute), which are found in /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/

A possible and only temporary solution is to navigate to
/usr/share/icons/Humanity/status and move away (or delete) the

exact same issue here, on a standard Ubuntu installation (not on VM!). output
