Update: after suspend and re-login network manager applet is working
well and I am able to see all available networks and connect. Also I am
able to install apps using ubuntu sw center.

I have the same issue on a HP Compaqnw8440. Just finished upgrading to 11.10
and I am connected to the INTERNET using wicd network manager. Still the
Network Manager applet is showing no wireless available and the message is
device not ready.
During login process I receive a message telling
