Confirming this with the combination of Asus Transformer TF101/Android
4.0.3 and Kubuntu 12.04 fully up to date.
This is beyond annoying! Can anyone comment on whether this is fixed in
other apt-based distros?

I am now having this problem too, after just upgrading to 12.04 from
11.10. I have noticed 2 things that may be relevant:
(1) It only occurs when booting with lightdm as display manager. I'm a
KDE user, and when I switched back to kdm, the problem went away. I've

Closing this - with apologies. Looks like I was up against a faulty
repository (unofficial mirror.) Problem resolved by using an official
mirror.
