Make sure rc.local is executable and use full path on the things you
want to run e.g. /sbin/modprobe ...

Also tried with Ubuntu 7.10 32bit running on a Intel 64bit. Works. So it
might be that only on AMD platforms it fails. Can you confirm this? I
asked a friend with AMD to test these days.
