I think I've found the culprit, disabling Kernel mode-setting solved the
problem. I have confirmed this on two machines now. It's more likely a
bug in the driver than a problem with compiz. KMS can be turned off
using this guide: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting.

After using the system for some time, the whole desktop becomes
unresponsive, and there are rendering artifacts where trying to open any
of the menus (trying to use anything really).
The problem appears to be random. I believe the problem is with

I think the problem is more general than the Human Theme, I get the same
problem by using the Dust theme (are they using the same engine?).
