I agree that this issue is ridiculous. Ubuntu developers have two
options if they respect loyal users.
1. They can fix the problem. It appears they are not willing to do this.
Or,
2. They can have the courtesy to provide reasons for not fixing the
problem. They may have good reasons.

I added the line blacklist = backend_manager to
/etc/checkbox.d/checkbox.ini and System Testing now works in Jaunty.

Using Jaunty kernel 2.6.28-11-generic. Update manager gave the
following message once the list of updates appeared:
E: The package cache file is corrupted.
E: _cacheopen() failed, please report.
The process for installing the updates then went ahead as usual.

I was not sure though which cache the error message was referring to.
