I am new to servers and forgot my username and password , after getting
username when i typed passwd username command to change the password it
shows password unchanged and showing some Authentication error

this will help you, do the following.
go to console (alt+ctrl+f1/f2.f6) and apply the command
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
after this restart your system.
try this command
