I agree with the duplicate status for the most part, and I have managed
to resolve my issues by booting via a non-LVM partition.
However, there are two additional points over and above simply that a

I just attempted to repair my grub install on a i386 PC recently
upgraded to Ubuntu Trusty Tahr. Specifically, this is a fresh install
to one of the partitions, but the existing partition table was kept as-
is. This means there are 64 blocks before the first partition,

I also have just run into this problem on an installation of Ubuntu
Lucid, owned by a non-technical user.
The machine had become unusable - many programs could not run, including

I also encountered this bug, after upgrading Hardy - Jaunty.
I compared the output of dpkg -L kdebase-bin on this upgraded machine,
to one which had Jaunty installed from scratch. Although the file list
from the upgraded machine includes:
