In the What is a color space? documentation page the verb to be is

You can see that in human vision there is many more shades of green
detected than blue or red.

an immediate feedback mechanism like Greg mentioned.
The delay should definitely be looked at. As a visual feedback mechanism
there could be a decent glow around the launcher if you hover over it
for example or to move it

I can confirm this. I have the exact same issue with an NVIDIA card
(9800 GTX+) on a dual monitor setup. For me it is enough to just left
click somewhere on the desktop to make it redraw properly.

A proposal. Have the list automatically select/add the selected
protocol upon a click on the list item. That would save the users one
extra click and would not really require a redesign of the entire UI.
