I tried this again with the latest 10.10 version of Ubuntu. This
behavior still exists.
Using a simplified version of the pre-start script (below) produces the
same (undesired) ureadahead behavior.
# set root drive to be ssd status
pre-start script
echo 0 /sys/block/sdb/queue/rotational

Trying to connect the whiteboard froze inkscape for some time, but
waiting gave this error on the console.

I repeated the same procedure on a Vista machine. It did not corrupt the
file on the vista machine.

I have noticed occasional file corruption on my camera flash cards, but
have not yet tried to reproduce it. I can reproduce it every time using
the sansa. I haven't noticed problems with regular usb flash drives.

Workaround
The following script when run in the same folder as index.html will build all
the thumbnails for the gallery to work correctly
imagemagick is required for this script to work.
Also, you need enough free space to duplicate the entire hq directory before it
converts to thumbnails.
Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.20.0
Ubuntu 7.10 amd64
The applet doesn't work, but running the following command as root does work.
echo -n [brightness] /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
where [brightness] is one of: 12 25 37 50 62 75 87 100
