I had the same problem and found moving to Unity-2D stops this
happening, but then you lose several area of functionality.

I solved it..
Having read a round disabling the FDD in the BIOS and commenting out the
entry in fstab fixed it.
I then found I had a problem with Ureadahead but reinstalling that fixed
it.
Boot all the way to desk top is now about 15 seconds.

I have the same problem with the fully released version of Ubuntu 8.04.
It also affects a VFAT drive.
I have checked Fstab to ensure it points to the right drive

internet if I waited for about 1 minute after logging into Gutsy, DNS
was not finding the website.

I have had a similar problem with only some (75%) of my bookmarks being
transferred. I have used the Firefox export/import method to resolve
this.
