I used following workaround for the problem:
Open a terminal and run: sudo visudo
Then add a line like this at the end of the file:
username ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/service
Of course changing username to the actual username.
After that, that user should be able to run 'sudo service cups start'
I have tried above workaround:
echo FRAMEBUFFER=y sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768
sudo update-grub2
but it didn't solve the problem for me. The size of the logo was ok
again after applying the workaround but after grub a

some days ago I've done a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04.
It's now the second time that when I try to print a document the printer
has disappeared. In the box where one normally selects the printer
there's only the option 'Custom...'

After clean install plymouth was working ok: small beautifull ubuntu

However after installation of the official nvidia driver (needed because games
