We've just found that disabling extended attributes with either the
nouser_xattr mount option or by disabling CONFIG_CIFS_XATTR in the
kernel, will allow us to use a NetApp CIFS mount albeit without the
extended attribute support. Can anyone else confirm that disabling
extended attribute support
Emil, rather than remove, it would probably be safer to just rename the
/etc/init.d/nis script to prevent it firing. We have a local package
here with the necessary changes and it appears to work fine. After a bit
more testing I'll upload for others to review.

I also have this on Lucid. We're attempting to mount a CIFS share from a
NetApp 3070 using pam_mount at login. Attempts to login at GDM produce
the same kernel errors as provided by OP and result in the login

I've now replicated this on a clean install of 8.04 when upgrading to
10.04, screenshot attached showing the point of failure.

A little piece of extra information that may be useful. Before I start
the do-release-upgrade the file /etc/modprobe.d/arch-aliases exists as a
symlink to ./arch/i386 but something appears to be removing it before
the update-initramfs runs resulting in the error and failed upgrade.

For the past 3 days (at least) I have been failing to upgrade 8.04 to
10.04 with do-release-upgrade -d due to a failure in the update-
initramfs trigger. The terminal output is shown below:

Colin, that is fair enough but it seems the level of output is too low
for server environments. Is it possible to configure the amount of
output with plymouth or would that also require changes to packages?

Unless Plymouth is absolutely required for the boot process on a server
then I don't see what benefits it brings. Feel free to correct me
though. I would much rather see every kernel/boot message on a plain
