Fixed. Turned out that a ram stick had failed. Not sure why it seemed
fine with kernel 5.8, but memtest86 confirmed the error and after
swapping out the ram the problem has disappeared.

I have to correct my earlier statement (comment 14), the linux-firmware
package update didn't fix the problem after all - it seemed to work for
a while, but I was mistaken. Now, however, I've gotten it working. The
correct fix is to add the following line to the end of
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

when I loaded the usbmon module and fired up wireshark the keyboard

I've tried all nvidia drivers, including direct downloads from the
website. Nothing works. I haven't tried installing gdm and using that
instead, however. May be worth a shot.
Right now I'm using nouveau with experimental 3D support, which works
for basic things, but not for my OpenGL development
A definite workaround is to use gdm instead of lightdm, I just tested it
and it works, so this is a lightdm problem.

Final comment: it does work after all. After a hard factor reset, enter
the IP address 10.0.0.1 and password public, then you can retrieve the
settings and set the device up. Simply ignore the Discover Devices
button, which doesn't work.

Ah right - if cryptsetup isn't installed, the enter password dialog
still appears, but entering the password doesn't actually do anything.
