I think that the problem is related with metacity compositing. I had the same
problem but solved by disabling metacity compositing and then replacing it with
xcompmgr.
xcompmgr is a lightweight compositing manager.
Now I'm running Maximus 0.4.14, Gnome 2.30.2, Debian Sid on my netbook and
Same issue for me...in my case is gnome bottom panel that prevent me to use

Restarting X or remove and re-add the binding solve temporarly the problem...
Has anyone solved?
Thanks a lot

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: maximus
Hi all, I have a problem when running Maximus.
Sometimes (not always) when I open or close (mostly when I close) a window,
gnome panel disappers and I have to got the focus of a window to see it coming
back, for example by calling kupfer
Same problem on lucid 64.
For me, the problem only shows up after logging in my system, when docky starts
automatically.
The only way to block the docklet is to drag it out of docky and then add it
back.

I forgot to mentione that I have the problem on Lucid 64-bit.
The only minor work around that I found is to set the speakers volume high and
then adjust the volume of the sistem with the player (Totem or
Rhythmbox)but clearly this is not a solution.
