I eventually succeeded in remonving python2.6. I then found it necessary to also remove gdm-new in order to get ubuntu9.04 working normally again, since gdm-new appeared to require python2.6 in order to function. (At any rate, installing gdm-new had resulted in also installing python2.6. ) **
