After adding linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic I have the same
problem as viannabugs. When I plug in the headphones, sound continues
through the speakers (and headphones).

I've came across this bug when trying to solve a problem with similar
characteristics to this one (i.e. netwok dropouts). Installing the
patched network-manager caused to interface to fail to configure itself
