Same thing happened to me after the upgrade. Switched back to the old
gnome and all the desktop effects had been changed. Opened up
compizconifg and when I turned the cube back on it lost all the other
effects, decorations, move windows... pretty much everything. Just
continue on with
libva appears to be broken in Natty. I downgraded back to the libva
pacakges from 10.10 and VLC works with hardware once again.

The motd message was somehow placed into /etc/motd.tail which is added
to the end of /etc/motd with a cat append command if the /etc/motd.tail

I can confirm that the solution from The Mike is working on 10.10 as
well. Personally I had to adjust the volume to the lowest to avoid
distorted sound. This may be because I have edited allot of config in my
long virtual trip to fix

I had same issue when booting Mint from USB stick. Changed the boot
sequence in BIOS (did not work when I simply F9 to temporarily change
boot order) to USB.
