In case you boot with an USB-stick, it may be very difficult to get VNC
running.
A quick workaround in the terminal, to make it work:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.Vino enabled true
$ gsettings set org.gnome.Vino require-encryption false

The failure that on /dev/sda is no superblock is correct, because it is an USB
stick with the ubuntu desktop edition live version. I want to setup an RAID1
array on /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc.

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 1004 netbook version on an Asus EeePc 900A.
I used the usb-creator.exe from the ISO image on Win XP.
The workaround from Joe Edmunds did help:
There is a workaround: choose Discarded on shutdown... option when creating
the USB Startup Disk.

The solution from titan3025 did work for me on an ASUS EeePC 900A:
If you use usb creator from ubuntu you need to choose the option Discarded on
shutdown, unless you save them elsewhere at the bottom of the window. Then the
usb key is created correctly and the installation works.

In /etc/samba/smb.conf I have security = user.
I try from Ubuntu to work with a windows share.
When I try in Nautilus smb://host-name I get no windows shares to see.
