Do you have an /etc/default/tor.vidalia? If so, try editing the file so
that it says not to start tor.

The DNS name deb.torproject.org is actually a set of independent servers
in a DNS round robin configuration. If you for some reason cannot access
it you might try to use the name of one of its part instead. Try deb-
master.torproject.org, mirror.netcologne.de or tor.mirror.youam.de.

It sounds like tor is already running. What happens if you type 'ps aux
| grep tor'? You could try to run 'dpkg-reconfigure vidalia' to tell
Vidalia to take over the Tor process and not start Tor until you start
Vidalia.

package in Ubuntu hasn't been updated, and I'm not sure why.
