Booting with acpi=off in the kernel line fixes this problem for me...

I've followed the procedure which produces this bug before: installing
Ubuntu 6.10 from a Live CD, upgrading to Feisty over an internet
connection. The first time I did it it worked fine. Since the first
installation my hard drive crashed and I had to do it again. I've now
