I'm wondering if the loss of audio is related to loss of alsa dmix, my pre-hardy home gnome prefences and pulse audio and multiple user logins. I'l check into that, it may have been that totem gstreamer (which I don't use for poor dvd menu support) couldn't play ANY audio. I'll look into it.
