I also think this is a bug because I would like to be able to do SMART
queries from the command line without installing an MTA.

Some people are wondering why this is a relevant thing for anyone to
want to do. One new reason, which is what motivates me, is that a
friend and I are interested in using SMART data for a security
application, to warn users if their machine/disk was turned on by anyone
in between successful Ubuntu boots (with successful LUKS/dm-crypt
mounts). This is akin to the old "3 unsuccessful login attempts since
last warning" messages, except this would be something like "Machine was
powered on 3 times since last successful boot". This requires a
convenient way to do SMART reads, but if our idea pans out and is
eventually packaged, it would get some kind of interface in gdm or even
earlier, and not rely on e-mail, so it would be desirable to avoid
bringing in the dependency on an MTA.

As an alternative, is there something packaged in Ubuntu other than
smartmontools -- say, a library -- that provides a clean programmatic
way to read SMART data that other applications can depend on?
