as a workaround, try:
logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog
this rotated my logfiles, but i had to manually restart rsyslog in order
to have it open a new /var/log/syslog

I have this issue in a slightly different way.
every 'plong' sound 2 fifo's are opened, and not closed anymore. after a
while pidgin runs out of filedescriptors and crashes. the system runs
pulseaudio.

if the udev rule for lvm is run by typing it manually watershed
complains about not able to create /var/run/watershed.
initramfs is missing the /var/run directory
after creating /var/run watershed runs succesfully
(i have not checked the PATH, but used fully qualified binary filename)

OK, decommisioned squid proxy and it works without a chirp.
Any suggestions? It is a bit to easy to point the finger directly at
squid.

as you can see from the previous logs, the connection direct is demuxed
with as demux='mp3' , the connection over the proxy is demuxed as
demux='avformat'.
A guess would be that the ICY metadata is still in the stream fed to the
avformat demux.

I have this problem on 8.10 amd64.
mdadm[2345]: segfault at 4 ip 00418d7d sp 7fff643653e0 error

Most of the time i didn't notice until my system did not want to mount anything

I could not resolve problem by stopping and starting the raid arrays

hal you just removed).
And altough you might not like the permission management of hal, if you
have a desktop system (not a server) you have no real choice.
Expect to see more and more subsystems to be
what worked for me was:
rm -r /dev/.udev/failed /dev/.udev/names /dev/.udev/db
/etc/init.d/udev stop
/etc/init.d/udev start
i guess this problem was caused because the system was upgraded from a
previous system, instead of clean installed.

Solved. Looks like there were some old config files in /etc/hal:
/etc/hal/hald.conf
/etc/hal/fdi/preferences.fdi.bak
as at least /etc/hal/hald.conf was mentioned in 'dpkg -L hal' i did:
dpkg --purge --force-depends hal
rm /etc/hal/hald.conf /etc/hal/fdi/preferences.fdi.bak
apt-get -f install
