i can monitor simfs in 12.04 perfectly fine, but not in 14.04 :(

I can confirm also that it's nothing to do with lubuntu software center,
that seems to be having a bug altogether unrealated. PCManFm seems to
close by itself on background processes after boot. Upon opening pcmanfm
later for file viewing it lasted approx two minutes before dying.

The issue occurs with --no-embedded-video too,
I forgot to mention, I am using the default gnome desktop. I reverted
back from unity when I upgraded to 11.04. The desktop effects are turned
off because I control this HTPC via vlc on my iphone. The bug is visible
on the TV, and over vlc.

When playing a DVD in vlc if I right click on the screen the menus are
immediately drawn over by the playing DVD. If I move my mouse over the
menu (which I cannot see) then as each item is highlighted it becomes
briefly visible before being again
