Nope, the machine is running a tuned Gentoo and out of my hands.

audio card vanishes in the pulseaudio mixers and playback stops if I try to

It looks like a problem with the soundcard because a usb sound chip
works like a charm. But I still can't use skype because it generates
100% CPU usage and the sound is stuttering except when ringing and
reporting status outside of a conversation.

Bugs,
@Daniel T Chen:
Yes it was, at least it worked until the mic was open. But I don't like
to reduce this to a problem with a closed source application because it
happens with gnome-sound-recorder too.
@Luke Yelavich:
The thing is that the I have interfaces for input and output in the
there but at
OK it appears to be a tricky one. I had the impression that I can
trigger the bug by recording but I was misled. It happens of it's own
will and not when I like to trigger it. Lucky thing is that this bug
likes to show of and so it happens after a little while.
This is a log from doing nothing at
This log shows pulse braking down while I was changing the mic recording
volume. This time I disabled the suspend in /etc/pulse/default.pa to be
sure that it is not triggered by the suspend.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: pulseaudio
I first discovered the problem in Skype but I can reproduce it with by:
1. restarting pulseaudio
2. play a tune with Rhythmbox
3. try to record with Audio-Recorder
Audio-Recorder reports Disconnected: Entität terminiert (entity
terminated)
Commenting out the loading of the suspend module in /etc/pulse/system.pa
did not change the behavior.

Same problem for me. I have described my symptoms and solution at

mdadm software raid breaks on
After the update to 9.04 I had the same problems but could build the md
devices in the emergency shell and resumed booting with:
# mdadm --assemble --scan;exit
Today I found the fix. I removed the duplicated definitions of the
arrays in mdadm.conf with the output of:
# mdadm --detail --scan
