Tried a full pass of running update manager to refresh the installation
to an up-to-date state.
Now the step from picture 2(language support dialogue) works correctly
and I have a translated desktop.
Not sure what this means for fresh installs though.

I have the same problem with VB 3.0.8 on Kubuntu Karmic AMD64, kernel
2.6.31-9-rt.
VirtualBox started freezing for a few seconds intermittently after

Okay, I used synclient to check on the touchpad settings. While the
touchpad was in its insensitive state, FingerHigh had a value of 80.
This was the value in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/touchpad.fdi, though I don't
remember ever changing it. Changing this to a value of around 15 made
the touchpad
