I have experienced same problem on Ubuntu7.10 64 bit O/S.
Adding msttcorefonts did not help.
Uninstalling thunderbird completely and re-installing including place-holder
packages mozilla-thunderbird and mozilla-enigmail have apparently solved the
problem.

With Ubuntu 5.10 the Battery chrage monitor was working properly and
shutting down the machine on reaching critical charge percentage (as set
