I've made some ivestigation.
I reinstalled with Natty than dist-upgrade: same result.
I reinstalled with Oneiric daily dvd: same result.
If I changed from gdm to lightdm, I got the login windows, but
completely frozen as no keyboard or mouse response. I tried with
nomodeset, doesn't count.

I run into this bug yesterday. It was really annoying.
Accidently I typed 'umount /'. Then I reboototed the box and logon to it
again by ssh. Unfortunately I didn't check, that is was still not
rebooted, because apache was working (it's a server): I thought, it was
just up again.
