Regardless of that, I would suggest to test with another greeter:
- install unity-greeter (sudo apt install --no-install-recommends unity-greeter)

located in /var/log/lightdm.

The package name is network-manager-gnome, but it listed under network-
manager-applet here on launchpad.
It may be necessary to switch to another icon theme and back after
adding those four new icon files. Also, a restart of the panel and nm-
applet may be required to see any change.

Can you reproduce this issue in the 18.10 Beta live session? The next
release comes with Thunar 1.8.1, and it would help to know if the crash
