Was trying to play audio through the totem video player whilst watching
a video. Visual side was perfect, but even with maximal volume set,
there was no audio whatsoever. Test confirmed that the audio is working
ok, so not sure what to do next. Apport says the fault's with

dead thing, that's been dead for a long time. I will be back up and
running on a fresh raring install in about two weeks. I'll be in touch

Yes. It may have been included in earlier kernels and simply failed to
fire - 3.8.0-2 is the first one I noticed it in, because instead of
ndiswrapper activating my wlan adapter, ar5523 did. If it hadn't been
for that, I'd probably never even realized it was there :)

Just to note here, I am doing some bisect work on the mainline kernels
trying to find a commit which broke a new wifi kernel driver (bug
#1113048), and i've found the last of the mainline kernels where
ndiswrapper would successfully build in dkms - and that is
3.8.0-030800rc3-generic.

OK - I can confirm that none of those 3 kernels contain the ar5523
driver, however, this does help to fix something else in the works,
which I mentioned earlier - ndiswrapper. The last of those 3 kernels
which 1.58~rc1 builds in successfully is 3.8.0-030800rc3-generic. At

the letter - except, since you didn't say where you'd gotten the rc
source for ndiswrapper, someone from #ubuntu directed me to the source
area on sourceforge - it's the version which is located here:

this about 5 minutes ago, it proceeded to start building the module and
then packed up, informing me that it couldn't find the binary package

Yes I did, Julian. I always go through the same sequence when I set up
ndiswrapper, I've learned enough of how to use it to know when I miss
stuff :) I always install the driver first, assign it to the device ID
next, then run -m -ma and -mi to set it up properly and create an
alias ,
I'd also like to attach the following - these are messages from dmesg
and the syslog, connected to ndiswrapper - maybe they'll help a little.

After receiving an email directly from one of the authors of this
module, Larry Finger, it appears that I had an ndiswrapper device
installed at the same time, thus it's tainted the Bootdmesg text for
