After a restart, the keyboard backlight is now controllable via Fn+F10.
Writing a new value to the brightness file doesn't appear to change
anything though (am not sure what the API is.. legal values appear to be
0..256 exclusive)

I've removed the NVIDIA drivers and configured Ubuntu to use Nouveau.
sudo apt-get remove --purge '^nvidia-.*'
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

This hasn't fixed the situation. Altering the settings does not affect
the actual screen brightness

I have an ATI card and this is happening to me after upgrading to Lucid.
Therefore, I think you're right that it's some sort of configuration

Interestingly, it's possible to get to the 'home' screen via the left
tree view if you're deeper into the tree. E.g. Click Provided by
Ubuntu, then click on Get Software.

I think the problem with Save as PDF / Save in PDF Format is that a
PDF generator and a virtual printer go about the process of creating the
PDF in two (very) different ways.
One way to improve things may be to say Virtual Print to PDF.

This error relates to permissions. Not a fault of Firefox really, but a
