Josh,
I expected Banshee to connect on the first try, or report some kind of
timeout during connection.
If Banshee cannot connect to a stream, it would be wise to report why,
instead of simply reporting no error/warning at all, and returning to
the Idle state.
Hopefully that clears things up.
I think there's also something else going on (perhaps with filling a
buffer, although that's a shot in the dark) beyond a UI issue: streams I
know to work for sure in other applications (ie. they are up, open for
connection, and latency is low) still take at least 3 tries to connect
in Banshee.
Kamus,
I don't think this is a duplicate. The behaviour I'm reporting leaves
Banshee in a usable state. I can still use all features of the
application. The problem is not a crash or a hang, but that the stream
doesn't connect, nothing is reported, and after two more attempts, the
stream works.
Thanks, Alessio. I'll definitely have a look later in the week!

Public bug reported:
Plugging in my Sony Walkman NWZ-E354 reveals that it is only seen as a
USB Mass Storage device, and not as a fully-MTP capable device.
Functionally, the player works fine for transferring and listening to
music, podcasts, and watching video (WMA only) as a UMS device.
Please note that I'm more than willing to patch libmtp to work with this
device - I need a starting point to jump into, though. Start with
libmtp? Start with hal?
Thanks!
