Ok, I did some analysis of what happens when you set defaults in kde default
applications.
As I mentioned above this has nothing to do with kde systemsettings which is
just a cute view of kcontrol meant for kubuntu.
When you select another default application for email/browsing etc. kcontrol

for the browser instead of calling directly x-www-browser

Kubuntu setting default components don't affect gnome/gtk apps
Something should check when KDE sets variables and set the equivalent
for Gnome configurations in case a gnome app is installed and should use
the same defaults. But this is not really the job of this bug.

Problem solved.
After installing a new kernel., dpkg runs update-grub. Read the man page, as
seen there, it checks the kernel files under /boot as well as the defaults set
up in menu.lst one of them being groot (hd0,8) This of course in my case has
to be edited to reflect the new partitioning.

I opened ticket #5167.
After updating the kernel using adept, the entries in grub for my kernel revert
to root (hd0,8) Which was correct up until I deleted a couple of partitions
(I was quad booting before with fedora and opensuse). Now this line needs to
read (hd0,5) which can be edited
