It did not change anything. When playing an MP3 with Mplayer, there is
no sound, and there is a mention of pulseaudio ticket 440. When playing
an MP3 with VideoLAN, there is no sound, but
$ sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
does not solve the problem.

I could not get the sound to work permanently in Kubuntu 9.10 x64,
except by doing an:
$ sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio
I thought it was an ALSA problem, but no, it is caused by pulseaudio
1:0.9.19-0ubuntu4.
My hardware is Realtek ALC1200
This is a confirmation that I have the same bug. I had the problem both
in an 9.04 installation of Kubuntu upgraded to 9.10 as well as in a
fresh Kubuntu 9.10 installation.
I did sudo apt-get update before sudo install gnome. Thinking that it
may help, I wiped the Ubuntu upgraded partition and
