Sure enough, I went through the sequence as outlined in this post

and it rebuilt the alsa drivers for the new realtek chip.
Audio working once again

Spent along time updating alsa drivers when first bought laptop in
June...audio (internal laptop speakers) working okay but microphone was
a problem.
At the end of July I sat down to do it all again and followed all the
