Same issue with Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB - wouldn't work with 390, 396, 410, or 415 drivers. Only Nouveau under Ubuntu 18.10 (upgraded from beta and previously 18.04 as original install)
Resolved by switching to lightdm and booting into Cinnamon Desktop instead of Gnome. Mate works as well. Also uncommented "WaylandEnable=false" for future possible use of gdm3 and gnome desktop.
