With XEmacs 21.4.21 (package xemacs21-mule, version 21.4.21-1ubuntu3.1) and Ubuntu 8.04.3, neither of the two issues above seems to occur anymore. (Sorry for not reporting back before: I applied the workaround described above, as a consequence I wasn't affected by the bug anymore.) -- xemacs:
