I'm facing the very same problem, but not with wine. I tried to have a
full screen eclipse and the gnome panel is above my eclipse window. On

standing in that device in a terminal (for example bash), the content
of my desktop disappears. Previously (in 9.04) a dialogue came with a
message that the media cannot be unmounted:
