I have the same problem with Kubuntu feisty and also gutsy.
I work with feisty since several months without problems. But since two
weeks the speed for filetransfer to and from samba-shares is very slow
(~50 KB/s).
To find the problem, I installed an new Kubuntu gutsy (32-Bit) and also
an Kubuntu gutsy (64-Bit). Both systems have the same behavior. I think
the reasen is the specific combination from network adapter (onboard)
and smbfs/cifs-protocol.
I work on a AMD64 core 2 duo 3800+ with nvidia-chipset.
my network-adapter: lspci -->
00:14.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP51 Ethernet Controller (rev a3).
