The crash no longer happens under the same configuration since I
rebooted the system after applying the updates. Rebooting, indeed, was
required for the Me menu update to come in effect.

I got this again in a Xubuntu 8.0.4 live CD. I am pretty sure the
problem is DPI related, as setting the DPI (changing wasn't required)
did restore normal font size for applications started after the change.
However, killing X did no good, as the DPI setting got forgotten.

I find Intrepid's version of Transmission, 1.33-0ubuntu1, is inferior on
Hardy's in many aspects. This is the most glaring problem:
You can no longer reduce Transmission to the system tray. The window
needs to sit on the desktop.
The option has been removed from the UI and the previously set option to
reduce to the system tray was not in effect for some reason.
However the system tray icon is still available through the -m switch at
command line.

It is of course fair to say that my overheating system isn't a software
bug.

1. During the setup, the CPU governor was changed for whatever reason.
It was not changed to my Powersafe default, nor to Ubuntu's OnDemand
default, but to Performance. I concede I don't really know what did
