I think this may well be an nvidia driver bug, for some time now the
driver has chosen to handle anti-aliasing for fonts and I suspect this
to be the issue, if you use a console with non-AA fonts i.e. xterm I am
sure this would not happen.

This is quite a common situation when compiz desktop effects are
enabled, are you using those? If so try disabling them and see of you

I can confirm this bug in kde4.1 on kubuntu 8.04 using ppa packages, if
the app is closed the copy buffer is lost. However if klipper is
enabled, it is possible to copy paste from a buffer after closing an
application, I am also unsure which package to file this bug against, in
my own instance
