I had the same prooblem with the grey rectangle in the upper left corner

followed the solution in post 82: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/control-center/+bug/61381/comments/82 and everything works again.

gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login
Public bug reported:
When running Firefox and Thunderbird using Initiate All sometimes only
shows the firefox windows and not the thunderbird window. This
occurrence is not always happening and I could not figure out which
former actions generate this behavior.
