I also have this problem only on 9.10, all previous Ubuntu versions
(since 4.04) worked well but it happens every time I shutdown (or
restart) my laptop.
Additionally, I also get the following messages:
Nov 8 20:07:19 ubuntu kernel: [19808.392380] INFO: task halt:5464 blocked for
more than 120
I already had the resolution I want as the first entry and I'm still
experiencing the problem :(

I don't have a ~/.gnome2/monitors.xml
And that doesn't seem to make much sense: X's configuration in a gnome2
folder? Are you sure?
I have already tried displayconfig-gtk and it didn't work either. :(

Sorry, looks like monitors.xml is indeed where you mentioned.
I am running Hardy on both my desktop and laptop but curiously, the filedoesn't
exist on my desktop - which is why I said I didn't have it.
Could this be because I upgraded my desktop from Gutsy?
Anyway, I deleted the file, as
Sorry, forgot to include the URL for the image of the distorted Windows screen:

And by the way, I just tried using the live CD with the option to Try

Correction: it looks like the install option now locks up the computer,
too. It didn't do this when I first installed Hardy - which is obvious,
since I managed to install it without a problem...

I also have this problem on my desktop computer, which has an Nvidia
6200 LE TurboCache.
I have tried razor1394's suggestion but it didn't solve the problem.
Additionally, running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg seems to
completely clear all device information from xorg.conf. Pretty much the
same
I am also having the same problem: graphics card not configured in
xorg.conf, tried using the fglrx driver, tried using the vesa driver but
nothing works.
I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 Mb of video ram in an Acer
Travelmate 4001 WLMi.

I can also confirm this on my laptop (Acer TravelMate 4001 WLMi,
graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon 9700/64 Mb).
After the fix in /etc/usplash.conf and executing «sudo update-initramfs
-u -k `uname -r`» it came back to normal.

Black screen, and bad usplash.conf
Thanks for the tip, Chris but it didn't work for me :(
I already have flashplugin-nonfree installed and the flash player files
in ~/.mozilla/plugns point to the flash player files in /usr/lib
/flashplugin-nonfree/, so I'm guessing everything should be working -
but it's not :(

I also experienced this problem after upgrading from Breezy to Dapper.
I have no problem with a fresh install of Dapper, though.
Is there a way around this?
Thanks.
